在作為畫家的父親感染下，拉斐爾年幼時就對繪畫產生了極大興趣。母親逝世後，父親再婚，拉斐爾轉跟隨佩魯吉諾學習繪畫。21歲青出於藍的他居於佛羅倫斯，受共和政治、民主精神和人文主義思想影響，亦同時學習達文西的構圖和米開朗基羅的人體表現，使他畫作就和他的性情一樣，和諧、圓融、愉快、優美、溫和，並與達文西、米開朗基羅合稱「文藝三傑」。
